Large emissions of sesquiterpenes and methyl chavicol quantified from branch enclosure measurements

چکیده
Multiple field studies have suggested chemistry within a forest canopy is poorly understood due to inadequate detection and quantification of reactive biogenic emissions, such as terpenes. To measure emission rates of terpenes at Blodgett Forest, a coniferous forest in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, we placed enclosures over branches of the dominant species at the site – Ponderosa pine, manzanita, and ceanothus – in the summer of 2005. Zero air, with ambient CO2 concentrations, flowed through the chamber system and volatile organic compound (VOC) emission measurements were made by proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), solid phase microextraction (SPME) on fibers followed by direct injection into a gas chromatograph with an ion trap mass spectrometer (GC-ITMS), and by in situ GC with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID). We show that previously undetected sesquiterpenes and methyl chavicol significantly contribute to the total reactive biogenic emission profile from this field site. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Quantifying sesquiterpene and oxygenated terpene emissions from live vegetation using solid-phase microextraction fibers.
Biogenic terpenes play important roles in ecosystem functioning and atmospheric chemistry. Some of these compounds are semi-volatile and highly reactive, such as sesquiterpenes and oxygenated terpenes, and are thus difficult to quantify using traditional air sampling and analysis methods. We developed an alternative approach to quantify emissions from live branches using a flow through enclosur...

The genus Ocimum L. belonging to family of Lamiaceae is widely distributed in Iran, Ocimum sanctum L. is described in many medicinal properties and a wide therapeutic range. It is used specially in the management of cough, ashtma, fever and common cold. In this research, samples were collected from Shahr-e-Rey, on August 2013, then essential oils were extracted by hydro-distillation and steam ...
متن کاملMethyl chloride ( CH 3 Cl ) and methyl bromide ( CH 3 Br ) emissions from economically important tropical crops
Tropical rainforests have recently been confirmed to be the largest source of methyl chloride and a missing source for methyl bromide. However, very few field studies have quantified methyl halide emissions from tropical plants. This study presents the first methyl halide emission measurements from 16 tropical crop species at the University of California, Berkeley Botanical Gardens. Leaf vial e...
متن کاملComparison of Essential oil of Ocimum sanctum L. from Fresh and Dry Aerial Parts by Hydro-distillation and Steam Distillation
The use of natural products as medicinal agents presumably predates the earliest recorded history. Ocimum sanctum L., is a plant which is used in several traditional medicine systems to cure various diseases. In this study aerial parts of Ocimum sanctum were collected on august 2014 from Shahr-e-Rey in Iran. Fresh and dry partsof plants essential oils were extracted with hydro-distillation and ...
متن کاملOrigins and composition of fine atmospheric carbonaceous aerosol in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California
In this paper we report chemically resolved measurements of organic aerosol (OA) and related tracers during the Biosphere Effects on Aerosols and Photochemistry Experiment (BEARPEX) at the Blodgett Forest Research Station, California from 15 August–10 October 2007. OA contributed the majority of the mass to the fine atmospheric particles and was predominately oxygenated (OOA). The highest conce...
